There is a new lifeline for parents who feel they would not be able to take care of a child.
A new Safe Haven Baby Box was blessed today at the Manitowoc Fire Station on Dewey Street.
The baby box offers a safe way for parents to relinquish their newborn child by placing them inside the box where the baby can be kept warm.
A silent alarm would then go off alerting emergency responders to pick up the baby and take it to a local hospital to make sure it’s healthy.
Groups including CASA of East Central Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County District Attorney’s Office, Knights of Columbus chapters, as well as state and local leaders stopped by to see the baby box blessed by Father Nico of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Manitowoc County District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre also led the dedication thanking everyone involved for their work to make it happen.
The Safe Haven Baby Box is the 10th located in Wisconsin and 487th in the United States.
We’ll have more information tomorrow about what the organizations had to say about the new baby box and what it means for eastern Wisconsin.
