A local man is giving his father the gift of a lifetime: a trip to the World Series.
Sam Busse from Tapped on the Lakeshore tells Seehafernews.com that he wanted to go to a game at American Family Field, but the prices were out of reach.
Sam then started looking at tickets and flights to Tampa Bay, where he found he and his dad could see a game and fly down for the same price as one ticket to American Family Field.
He recalled getting the tickets and calling his dad.
“So I said, ‘Hey dad, what are you doing on Tuesday?’ And he said, ‘Well, I do have something going on.’ And I said, ‘Do you have to be there for that?’ and he said, ‘Not really.’ Well then, I said, “Let’s hop on a flight and head down to Tampa.”
Sam’s father, Terry Busse, says the Brewers in the World Series is the “greatest thing since sliced bread” as he looked back to when Milwaukee first went back in 1982.
Things didn’t go the Brewers’ way 44 years ago, so he’s hoping things will change.
“All my life I’ve been a Brewer fan,” he explained. “I remember when Sam was a kid, and we used to go over by my brother’s house in the middle of summer, out by the campfire in the backyard with the radio on listening to Bob Uecker doing Brewers play-by-play.”
Terry says he’s remained a fan through and through, despite some tough postseason losses.
He beamed as he recalled listening to Game 4 of the NLCS when Jackson Churio went out to get a ball hit into the left field, completing the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“When it happened, my wife and I both jumped up in the air (and said) ‘Yes. We’ve waited. We’re going, we’re going the rest of the way!’’” he said with a smile.
Terry was asked what he sees between this year’s World Series team and the one in 1982.
He says both are having fun playing the game, but what could push the Brewers over the edge this year is their manager, Pat Murphy.
“I think Murph is doing a great job, and he is giving them the reins,” he explained. “And the same thing kind of happened back then too because it was Harvey. Harvey Kuenn, that was the manager. He was kind of like a one-year manager. And he came on and tried to do the trick, but I don’t think he had enough push.”
Sam explains that the trip will be very quick, with him and his dad flying out on Tuesday before coming back on Wednesday, but it should still be a lot of fun.
“(I) just kind of want to try and relax and take in as much as we can and just really enjoy being at the game, spending some time with dad,” he admitted. “And, let’s go baseball!”
Game 1 between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays is getting underway tonight.
Coverage of the game will be on 980 WCUB beginning at 6:25 p.m.
