The Sheboygan Area School District has received additional federal funding.
The District has shared that it has received a $55,000 Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Innovation Grant through the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
This funding will help the district provide additional resources to address challenges faced by students experiencing homelessness.
Primarily, these funds will help bolster relationship-based and social-emotional support for these students.
This funding comes as SASD data shows that, as of this April, the attendance rate for elementary students was about 94%, compared to 81% for elementary students experiencing homelessness.
This school year, the district has identified 240 of its elementary students experiencing homelessness, and this grant gives SASD more opportunities to build on the support already being provided by staff to those children.
On the grant, Amee Dulmes, SASD’s McKinney-Vento and Path Liaison, explained, “The EHCY grant means so much because it allows us to do more than respond when a student is in crisis. It allows us to build relationships, create connections, and put meaningful support in place. This grant allows us to show our students that they matter, that we see them, and that we will continue showing up for them.”
