Today is Columbus Day, and that means several office closures.
Some local, state, and federal offices will not be open today, along with some major banks. Some trading will occur on Wall Street, with the New York Stock Exchange open, but the U.S. Bond Market will not open today.
Residents also will not receive mail today because the U.S. Postal Service is closed for Columbus Day.
The federal holiday is celebrated on the second Monday in October and is named after Christopher Columbus for his discovery of a portion of North and South America.
The day is also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in some cities and states after years of criticism of Columbus and his treatment of the native people.
