Week eight of the high school football regular season features several teams looking to continue their winning ways.
Manitowoc Lutheran looks to extend their Big East Conference football winning streak to 17 tonight as they host the Reedsville Panthers at Coach Heiderich Field.
The Lancers were in a tussle at Hilbert last Thursday night, trailing at one point 17-14 before scoring a late first-half touchdown to take a 21-17 halftime lead.
Their defense, after allowing their first two touchdowns of the season, stepped up in the second half to put the clamps on the Wolves to pull away for a 35-17 victory.
Manitowoc Lutheran’s formula for success has been to physically impose their will on the opposition by running the football, stopping the run, and most recently cashing in on big plays in the passing game.
Junior quarterback Aaden Krause had pass completions of 52 yards to Isiah Hochmuth and another of 21 yards on fourth down to Brody Wieting for a touchdown against Hilbert, which now has opposing defenses having to prepare for threats in both phases of their offensive arsenal.
Reedsville comes into tonight with a record of 2 and 3 in The Big East and 2 and 5 overall.
The Panthers are a rather “young team” led by senior quarterback Lucas Lodel. Sophomore Jeffrey Zabel has provided some pop in the running game, rushing for 330 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns, while junior Zach Prochnow leads the Panthers in receptions (13), receiving yards (213) and receiving touchdowns (4).
Meanwhile, 19 Manitowoc Lutheran seniors will be honored prior to kickoff as they suit up for the final time in front of “Lancer Nation” during the regular season.
Coverage of tonight’s game will be on 98.9 FM WOMT 100 and WOMTRadio.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
The Valders Vikings look to run their winning streak to four as they travel to Ron Rubick Field in Manitowoc to battle the Roncalli Jets.
The Vikings are coming off an impressive 30-0 win last Friday night over Two Rivers as they ran the ball for 318 yards, led by Blake Bergel’s 105 yards and quarterback Brayden Lenz added 99 more.
After a 0-2 start, Valder’s season has turned around with the switch of Brayden Lenz from running back to quarterback and a much improved defense that has allowed only 14 points during their recent winning streak.
Roncalli was 2-2 at one point, but they’ve been beset by injuries to several players that have resulted in the Jets dropping their last three games.
It’s also Senior Night for Roncalli and coverage of tonight’s game on 980 WCUB and CubRadio.com begins at 6:45 p.m.
