The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers that this time of year is the peak time for deer activity.
On its Facebook page, the county says it saw 184 car-versus-deer crashes, resulting in one reported injury last year. That’s up from 155 reported in 2024.
Notably, 28 crashes happened in October and 36 in November. Deputies ask drivers to slow down and stay vigilant, especially in rural and wooded areas.
Other tips include using high beams when there is no oncoming traffic to help illuminate deer, blowing your horn to frighten deer away from the roadway, and staying in your lane, even if you see a deer in the road.
Manitowoc County has also seen a steady increase in car-versus-deer accidents.
The Wisconsin DNR says there were 711 collisions last year compared to just 645 the year prior.
Those numbers are far from the highest reported car-deer accidents in the last 10 years. That number was 788 in 2017.
