An immigration judge has ruled that the leader of Wisconsin’s largest mosque can be deported on foreign policy grounds.
Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, has lived in the U.S. since 1993 and has no criminal record in the country.
Government attorneys argued Sarsour’s convictions in Israel make him a national security threat.
Sarsour denies committing those crimes and says his confessions were coerced. ICE detained Sarsour in March before his release in June.
The judge rejected a separate claim that Sarsour lied to immigration authorities.
Sarsour claims he is being targeted for his Palestinian rights advocacy and plans to appeal the deportation ruling.
