The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is tracking an outbreak affecting wild deer across several southeastern counties.
Officials confirmed epizootic hemorrhagic disease in Washington County, where more than one thousand deer deaths have already been reported.
The virus spreads through biting midges and causes high fever, severe weakness, and dehydration in infected animals.
Health officials advise residents to avoid handling dead wildlife and to report sick or dead deer to the state’s wildlife switchboard.
The outbreak is expected to taper off naturally.
