Congress gives a big win to AM radio. Yesterday (September 15th), the U.S. House passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025.
The National Association of Broadcasters calls the move a “significant step forward for the millions of Americans who rely on AM radio for lifesaving emergency information, trusted news and a vital connection to their communities.”
The legislation was created after car makers began removing the AM radio dial of their fully electric vehicles.
Seehafer Broadcasting Vice President Terry Stevenson says he and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association are very excited about the House’s move.
“It’s really amazing to see the bipartisan support for AM radio,” he explained. “And now were onto the Senate. That’s the next plan; that’s the next step.”
Here on the lakeshore, WOMT and WCUB started on the AM dial at 1240 and 980, respectively. Stevenson says local news, talk, and information are shared on the AM dial.
Our community, Manitowoc, we grew up on AM radio,” he recalled. “We grew up with WOMT, WCUB. And I think it’s the fact that we are the local voice. We are your local trusted source for information, for news, for programming. And that’s what AM radio is all about.”
The legislation requires all new passenger vehicles manufactured in the U.S. to carry AM radio.
