Milwaukee’s Department of Community Wellness and Safety is starting a new initiative to lower the city’s annual homicide total below 100 for the first time in over five years.
Called “This Is Our City: The Countdown,” the effort targets 26 specific areas that account for most of Milwaukee’s gun violence this year.
City teams plan to tackle two areas each week, offering environmental assessments to fix issues like poor lighting and overgrown bushes.
Officials are also connecting these neighborhoods directly with housing, mental health and job resources.
