Two Brown County communities are making changes to how they use a controversial piece of technology.
The De Pere Police Department has announced that it is ending its use of Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader products after an investigation.
While they said that the use of these cameras can be tremendously valuable in solving crimes efficiently, they added “Recent information updates and public sentiment have caused significant public trust concerns if Flock use continues.”
The Department found multiple contract and data management violations, unauthorized data disclosures, and misrepresentation of system capabilities with Flock, leading to the change.
Meanwhile, the Green Bay Police Department has drafted a newly revised ALRP Policy, which they are allowing the public to review before putting into effect.
The revised policy increases privacy protection through a reduced data retention period from 30 days to only 7.
