As staff deal with an ongoing feline virus outbreak, the Humane Society of Sheboygan County has extended its closure.
The Humane Society originally informed the public that it was experiencing an outbreak of feline panleukopenia on Thursday (September 10th), noting they would be closing their doors through Friday (September 11th).
However, as the shelter team continued to respond to cases of feline panleukopenia within the facility, the Humane Society has extended its closure through September 17th.
In a public statement, the Humane Society added, “This extended closure gives our team additional time to focus on intensive cleaning, monitor the health of the cats in our care, and take every precaution possible to limit further spread.”
While the closure is in place, the shelter is closed to general public traffic and animal viewing, and healthy cat surrenders will be paused, as bringing healthy cats or kittens in could put them at unnecessary risk of exposure to the virus.
However, online adoption applications remain open, and dog strays and surrenders will continue as usual, as feline panleukopenia does not infect dogs.
