The City of Manitowoc is deactivating its Flock cameras.
Mayor Justin Nickels and Police Chief John Musial issued a joint statement, explaining that this only applies “to the cameras owned and operated by the City of Manitowoc. Privately owned Flock systems installed by independent businesses or property owners are not affected by this decision.”
They assured the public that “this decision does not stem from any known local misuse, malfunction, or policy failure. Based on everything we have seen, we have no indication that Flock accessed or misused any Manitowoc data in the way alleged elsewhere. While we will continue verifying as a precaution, nothing currently suggests that similar issues occurred here.”
The City’s current contract with Flock Safety runs through early 2027, so over the coming months, the City will determine whether to continue, modify, or discontinue that contract and will evaluate alternatives.
The duo closed, saying, “Our commitment is to ensure the Manitowoc Police Department has effective tools to keep the community safe while maintaining full transparency and respect for the privacy of the residents we serve.”
