A restoration project at Silver Creek Park is close to completion.
Manitowoc’s Parks and Recreation Department has been working to reduce erosion and create habitat along Silver Creek after the city and Wisconsin DNR noticed stream bank erosion.
Mayor Justin Nickels says the challenge was always the cost. Instead of going to taxpayers, $650,000 was secured in state and federal grants to make the project a reality.
Funding came from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Great Lakes Commission, and the DNR. Nickels says the three sections of Silver Creek that were repaired will improve fish habitat, reduce erosion, remove invasive species, and plant trees.
The mayor continues to say he is “incredibly proud of our City team for seeking out grants instead of relying on local taxes to fund improvements. Their initiative is exactly why Manitowoc continues to grow stronger and more sustainable.”
Nickels finished by calling the project a win for the environment and community and thanked everyone who played a role in getting it done.
