A new proposal would have the Green Bay Correctional Institution close within the next five years.
WBAY reports that State Representatives Ben Franklin and David Steffen have shared their new plan to put a closure date on the 128-year-old facility, which has faced staffing shortages and heavy overcrowding.
Specifically, the proposal would set a closure date four years after it is signed into law, which means if the legislature comes to a consensus and agrees to pass the bill in January, the facility would be closing in early 2031.
The Assembly and State Senate previously agreed to allocate $15 million for the process, but the plan was vetoed, citing a lack of a concrete plan.
This new proposal would institute a $628 million realignment plan, which would increase capacity and fund staffing at several other correctional facilities around the state to accommodate the movement of prisoners.
