What started as a simple search warrant for a stalking case turned into a much larger investigation.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office was asked to assist the Madison Police Department in the execution of a search warrant in rural Fond du Lac County.
During the search, investigators located books, documents, and memorabilia related to murders and serial killers, along with skeletal remains including what appeared to be numerous human skulls.
Among the serial killer memorabilia were a grave rubbing reading “Edward Gein,” ten binders labeled “Edward Gein Book,” items from Gein’s grave or home, and a jar with a label indicating it contained a piece of John Wayne Gacy’s brain.
Detectives are currently working with a forensic anthropologist affiliated with the Wisconsin Crime Lab, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Wisconsin Inter-Tribal Repatriation Committee, and specialized laboratories to determine whether the remains are authentic and whether they are modern-era remains or archaeological Native American remains.
The initial examination determined that many are likely ancient Native American in origin, but several of the skeletal remains require specialized forensic testing at a laboratory to determine their origin.
