As the public discourse surrounding Flock cameras continues, the City of Two Rivers is explaining why they decided to invest in them.
In a public statement, the City noted that during the search for Elijah Vue in 2024, investigators had little information on where potential suspects had been at the time of his disappearance.
The City specifically noted, “One of the frustrations at the time was that Two Rivers had very little public camera infrastructure capable of providing that information. Residents understandably asked why we didn’t have more cameras.”
That led to the Two Rivers Police Department investing in “investigative camera technology,” including six Flock license-plate-reading cameras at the three primary highway entrances and exits to the community.
Today, there are ten such cameras in Two Rivers, which cost the city around $30,000 per year out of the $13 million General Fund.
The City admitted, “There are legitimate conversations to have about cost, privacy, retention policies, oversight, and how this technology should be used. Those discussions are important. But as we have those conversations, it’s also important to remember why Two Rivers invested in this technology in the first place.”
