The Valders High School Football team has been training hard over the summer and they are more prepared than ever.
Jon Lenz, the team’s head coach, says that his athletes have put in the work this summer.
They have participated in summer weightlifting programs and speed and agility training before practice even started.
Now that the season is underway, Coach Lenz can tell that their work has paid off as they are “Just trying to be better, become better athletes all around.”
This year’s team is missing some of its core players that have really made an impact in the past, but Coach Lenz is hoping that the new seniors will step up and show their leadership on the field.
He has selected four athletes to work as his team captains: Brayden Lenz, Brody Mueller, Vincent Stevens, and Mason Staudinger.
Coach Lenz believes that these seniors have what it takes to lead the team to the playoffs.
“We have one upperclassman, senior captain, he’s a heck of an athlete on both sides of the ball,” he explained. “You know, he’s going to take a seat for the first few games this year. And then, there’s another senior captain that I think is going to play a significant role on both sides of the ball.”
His goal this year is simple: get his team to the playoffs.
What Coach Lenz really wants to see from this team is leadership and teamwork, and he believes with hard work and determination, anything can happen.
“You have to work together as a team,” he said bluntly. “And some time things won’t always go your way, but you just have to buckle down and grind through it and figure out a way to preserve and come out on top.”
Valders Varsity Football has their first game August 21st at 7:00 pm in Howards Grove.
