Over the past month and a half, the Appleton Police Department has been investigating a wave of vehicle-related theft incidents.
Since July 1st, the Department reports that they have responded to 28 thefts from vehicles, 15 vehicles being rummaged through, and 11 vehicles being stolen on the north side of the city.
Department officials are asking the public to take some extra steps to ensure you are not the next victim, regardless of where you live.
First and most simply, always lock your vehicle even if you are only stepping away for a few minutes.
Leaving valuables out in plain sight is also a bad idea, as thieves tend to strike the easiest, most promising target.
One tip that many may not think of is making sure the inside of your vehicle is clean.
Criminals are sometimes attracted by non-valuable items, leading to them rummaging through what is there.
When possible, park in well-lit areas and make sure you take your keys with you every time.
Lastly, motorists who park in a garage are being reminded to always close the garage and make sure it is locked.
The Appleton Police Department noted, “These small habits take very little time and can go a long way toward preventing an opportunity for theft…A few seconds now can save you a lot of frustration later.”
