Manitowoc Public Utilities is starting a second upgrading project.
The East Stack Filters at the wastewater treatment plant were shut down at the end of April after MPU finished upgrading its West Stack Filter and Final Clarifiers #2 and #3 last year.
As with last year’s project, all media will be replaced, and new mechanical drives, distributor arms, and fans will be installed.
Clarifiers #1 and #4 will also be upgraded. #1 has been fully demolished, and the upgrade is nearly complete, with new effluent, concrete, and the center column and bridge being assembled ahead of installation.
It will be restarted at the end of the month.
The #4 clarifier is offline and ready for demolition, which is scheduled to begin next week.
MPU says the rehabilitation project is crucial to the wastewater treatment plant’s ability to produce permit-compliant effluent.
The full project will be completed by the end of the year.
