The Manitowoc County Fair is fast approaching, and this is always an exciting time for everyone, including local law enforcement.
Dan Hartwig is the Manitowoc County Sheriff, and he says that he is definitely looking forward to this year’s fair season.
He and several deputies will be present at the fairgrounds every day to make sure that everyone is safe during this exciting weekend.
Sheriff Hartwig says that the main problem they face at the fair is missing children, and he has some tips on how parents can keep track of them.
He encourages families to have a meeting spot, so in case you get separated, everyone knows where to go, and to take a picture of your child right when you arrive at the fair, so, in case they go missing, everyone knows who to look for and what they are wearing.
His final tip is to make sure your children are comfortable with police officers.
“Encourage them to interact with law enforcement,” Hartwig encouraged parents. “We want children to run to us, not from us.”
On top of officers being at the fair to patrol the grounds, there will also be some special officers there each day to show the community some of their special equipment and what their jobs entail.
Sheriff Hartwig noted, “On Wednesday, our dive team is going to be out there, thursday were going to have some of our SWAT team members out there, Friday is going to be our detectives and our Criminal Support Specialist, and Saturday, we’re bringing some of our honor guard members out there.”
This year, Sheriff Harwig is going to have a unique part to play at the county fair.
“They had the idea of getting a dunk tank out at the County Fair and asked if I would participate. And I’m like, you know what? It’s probably going to be hot out, it might be actually a little refreshing,” he revealed. “If you want to take a shot and put me in the water, be my guest.”
All the money he raises will go to a non-profit of his choice.
