Manitowoc County’s executive is providing more details after it was learned three county communities will not get snow plowing services this winter.
Tyler Martell explained on his Martell for Manitowoc Facebook page that the Villages of St. Nazianz and Whitelaw and the Town of Manitowoc have normally contracted with the county previously.
At the same time, other municipalities have snow plowing services or contract with another outlet.
The county is also now in charge of clearing snow from the updated I-43 rest areas that were opened last week.
Martell says the county would be fully staffed with the 34 Highway maintenance workers, but they’ve been consistently operating with three to five fewer employees.
Now, they are operating 20% below full staffing levels.
The county executive stated that, given where the county is, they do not have the capacity to remove snow from the over 900 miles of road they are required to plow and take on additional contractual work for towns and villages.
Martell noted that if things were to change, he would like to see the Highway Committee reconsider the stoppage of services.
Manitowoc County Highway Commissioner Greg Grotegut sent a letter to St. Nazianz, Whitelaw, and the Town of Manitowoc announcing their stoppage back on July 15th.
The affected communities have been working to find new groups to help them plow snow this upcoming winter.
