Mayor Justin Nickels
Following the sale of the former Manitowoc Wendy’s building, Mayor Justin Nickels has been getting bombarded with questions about what is going to happen with the property.
Mayor Nickels said that, just like everyone else, he has no idea.
He explained, “Private businesses that buy private properties aren’t required to inform the city. Most times, in cases like this, we find out when they eventually pull a building permit. Or, when they start advertising to hire. If a private business buys private property, and it is zoned appropriately for that type of business, there is no reason they have to come to the city for anything.”
4441 Calumet LLC purchased the building from JB Properties for $1.125 million, which Mayor Nickels says indicates that they “clearly feel that whatever they are putting in its place will make a profit.”
The mayor also said he is happy the property sold relatively quickly and hopes it will soon be back to “contributing to the tax base for all our benefit.”
