Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is speaking out on the decision to clear out the encampment at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets.
Protesters have been camping out there since the July 22nd police shooting of Corey Ruiz.
Multiple tents, tables, vehicles, and a large memorial were set up in the intersection.
In a video statement released yesterday, Rhodes-Conway said the decision was not made lightly, and it comes “after almost two weeks of trying to resolve the situation peacefully, and voluntarily.”
At least 16 people had been arrested as of noon yesterday.
A Democratic candidate for governor is also disappointed with the outcome of an encampment in Madison.
State Rep. Francesca Hong spoke out yesterday following Mayor Rhodes-Conway’s decision to clear out the area at Williamson and Baldwin streets.
In a statement, Hong called on Madison to be transparent about arrests and “tactics used by law enforcement.”
She wanted to make sure personal items and memorial materials were returned to their owners.
