With the recent disastrous weather in our area, a local builder is letting residents know what to do to be prepared for any weather that comes our way.
Brandon Bartow from Bartow Builders are giving tips on what to do before and during a weather crisis to keep you and your family as safe as possible.
Bartow encouraged listeners on his Welcome Home program to “take this time and use this time to your advantage, so that if you are faced with a disaster, that little bit of planning goes a long way.”
Their first tip is to make sure that your property is insured. It’s better to pay a little bit for protection than to replace your home and everything in it.
Also, try to document and take pictures of your property annually, along with having an itemized list of the most valuable items in your home.
Bartow noted, “You need to take that time to meet with your agent and talk about your coverage, your policies, reading and understanding them, and then talking also about the coverage that you want.”
Another good investment is a home generator. Homes are losing power more often now than they have in the past, and if you’re stuck for days without power, you’re going to want a generator.
Another thing they say is to make sure that any children who may be home alone during the day know what to do in case of an emergency.
They should know where to go in the home during an emergency and who to call.
One of the most important things to do before any storm is to make sure you have a plan.
If sirens go off, or you get a notification about bad weather coming, don’t wait.
Get to a safe space immediately.
Bartow encouraged everyone to “(make) sure that everybody is safe, everybody is covered, and that you have talked with your family members about an emergency plan.”
