Senator Tammy Baldwin’s insulin cost bill has passed a committee vote.
The Wisconsin Democrat is the driving force behind the Improving Needed Safeguards for Users of Lifesaving Insulin Now (INSULIN) Act, which aims to cap the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35 per month.
Senator Baldwin said of the bill, “There is no reason these big drug companies should be able to continue to charge so much for a medicine that has been around for more than 100 years and remains basically unchanged.”
More than 40 million Americans live with diabetes, including over 526,000 Wisconsinites.
The disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming over 100,000 lives in 2021.
The bill recently passed in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee and is now headed to the full Senate.
