Manitowoc Public Utilities reminds residents about replacing their lead service lines.
Water and Wastewater Manager Rob Michaelson tells Seehafernews.com that lead was commonly used in plumbing in the 1950s until it was legally banned 30 years later.
In Manitowoc, records showed that 5,600 homes had water service that included lead.
That number is now closer to 1,800. Michaelson says residents who want their lead service lines replaced must tell MPU, because the cost is the property owners’ responsibility.
Residents can receive some assistance since the public utility has applied for and gotten $18 million in financial assistance.
All properties in the Clipper City are eligible for some help in paying for their lead lateral replacement, with some areas eligible for 100% funding assistance.
Michaelson tells residents that if they are hearing about the program now, it’s because all remaining properties that have lead lines are eligible for assistance, when it was previously dedicated to certain areas of the city.
