One man is dead after being shot by a police officer in Madison.
Authorities say officers were called out yesterday to the Marquette Neighborhood on a report of a man stealing bicycles and checking vehicle doors.
Officers located the man, but he rode away on a bicycle. Officers later located the man near South Baldwin and Williamson streets and a struggle ensued.
During the struggle, authorities say the man pulled out a knife and injured an officer.
Officers used a taser before the injured officer shot the man, who died at the hospital.
A second officer was also injured, but it isn’t clear how.
The incident is under investigation.
The shooting led to protests in the city.
Concerts on the Square were cancelled last night due to the demonstrations.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says her heart breaks for those who have lost a loved one, adding that there is real pain in the city right now.
She called the shooting an “absolute tragedy.”
The mayor says people have every right to peacefully protest and that city staff is working to facilitate that.
