Manitowoc County’s congressional representative in Washington opposed an amendment in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that would “reverse important student loan reforms.”
Congressman Glenn Grothman of Glenbeulah says the federal government has encouraged too many young Americans to take out “enormous amounts of student debt for degrees that do not always lead to good-paying careers.”
In a hearing in the U.S. House Budget Committee, Rep. Grothman reiterated that to him, rolling back provisions in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” would not help.
“(It) would add $350 billion in spending over the budget window,” he stated. “President Biden’s student loan cancellation scheme incentivized skyrocketing tuition but also punished working-class taxpayers at an amount of over $180 billion.”
Rep. Grothman says President Trump’s bill streamlined student debt repayment plans, saving taxpayers.
The Glenbeulah Republican noted that annual borrowing for student loan debt has been limited to prevent overborrowing.
He also recalled meeting constituents who’ve taken out too much.
“These people who have overborrowed for graduate degrees and are just stuck,” he explained. “And I think the only reason you want to give them more money is to prop up some of the people who make their money on teaching and administering these degrees who, like I said, they are making money on people offering a service that doesn’t add value.”
Rep. Grothman finished the hearing by adding a document to be submitted to the House Budget Committee on colleges raising certain prices.
