The City of Sheboygan is seeking state funding to make improvements at multiple intersections.
Earlier this week, the Public Works Committee approved two separate resolutions that would authorize Mayor Ryan Sorenson to enter into State/Municipal agreements with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to replace old, aging traffic signals along 14th Street.
If fully approved, this funding would see the installation of new stop lights and reconstruction at the intersections of North 14th and Erie Avenue and South 14th and Indiana Avenue.
When explaining the need for these projects, City Engineer Kevin Jump explained to the Committee that, since 2020, DPW staff have responded to 27 total incidents between both intersections that damaged the existing traffic signals, leaving them in need of replacement.
Earlier this month, Public Works staff was notified that they were awarded approximately $1.7 million from the WisDOT to complete these projects, with the City required to match just under $200,000.
With this unanimous decision from the Public Works Committee, the matter now moves in front of the Common Council for final approval.
