A science teacher at Manitowoc Lutheran High School has been honored for his work in conservation.
Joel Barthel was named a recipient of the 2026 Lake Michigan Champions of Conservation Award.
Which recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in protecting and enhancing the lands and waters of the Lake Michigan Basin through outstanding programs, policies, restoration efforts, and environmental stewardship.
Mr. Barthel has been teaching students about how they can keep Lake Michigan healthy through student projects and hands-on learning.
The school said that this effort “embodies the spirit of this award and inspires our students to become faithful stewards of God’s creation.”
Manitowoc Lutheran leadership said that his “passion for conservation and commitment to equipping the next generation makes a lasting impact on our Lancer family and the community. We are grateful for your leadership and proud to have you as part of the MLHS team!”
