A historic Calumet County monument is moving to a new location in Chilton.
The Civil War Monument at the Calumet County Courthouse is being relocated to Klinkner Memorial Park.
It will be set on a decorated flagstone base with solar lighting and new landscaping, like flowers.
The statue’s idea became a reality through the efforts of Austrian immigrant Anton Kocher, who was wounded in a Civil War battle less than nine years after coming to the United States.
In 1900, he went to the Calumet County Board to ask for $3,000 to be set aside to build a memorial for those who served.
The county board turned it down, so Kochner decided to raise the money to build the statue.
The 19-foot red granite monument features a soldier complete with a rifle, in the uniform of a Union soldier in the Civil War.
The City of Chilton thanked Miron Construction and the Calumet County VFW Post 3153 for donating their time and materials to complete the project.
