The Manitowoc Police Department is continuing to strive for a safer Manitowoc.
Newly appointed Police Chief John Musial and Captain Cooper Schmidt recently made an appearance on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, where they said that, while some residents look up to them, they are just regular people who want to help out their community and keep people safe to the best they can.
Some steps that they take to make our community as safe as possible is having a unit for street crimes.
“That’s really what street crimes is focusing on is all of those proactive things in our community,” Chief Musial explained. “They work very closely with the recovery community as well.”
Chief Musial added that, at the end of the day, it’s all about protecting the residents.
“Our approach has always been to put Manitowoc and the lakeshore first,” the chief stated. “We want to make our city the safest that it can be for the people who live here, the people who visit, and really anybody who is here and participating in all the things that we do.”
Captain Schmidt also spoke about the actions they are taking to handle child-related crimes within Manitowoc County.
“When someone is released from prison, I guess the best example I can give you is we vet them,” he explained. “We make notifications through the community of extended supervision that they would be on. Probation and parole is always involved. So there’s definitely, we keep an eye on the individuals, definitely. Mainly probation and parole, though, they’re on the extended supervision.”
With summer here, two officers who are certified on E-bikes will be out and about more often, patrolling the lakeshore and outdoor events in Manitowoc.
Chief Musial and Captain Schmidt also say in response to concerns about certain streets that have reckless drivers around pedestrians, that they are aware of these areas and are doing everything they can to control reckless drivers and keep pedestrians safe.
