Lightning safety is something everyone should know, and ReadyWisconsin is here to educate.
Lighting Safety Awareness Day in Wisconsin is June 23, so ReadyWisconsin is encouraging Wisconsinites to be aware of the dangers of lightning.
The first rule is to make sure that you have shelter.
The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is inside a sturdy, enclosed building. Stay away from open areas, bodies of water, and trees.
When inside during a thunderstorm, avoid anything electrical, such as windows or doors.
If inside a vehicle, don’t touch any metal surfaces.
Make sure to know when storms are coming and plan to have shelter during those times.
Second, make sure you know the 30-30 rule.
If the time between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is 30 seconds or less, seek shelter immediately.
After the last clap of thunder, wait at least 30 minutes before returning outdoors.
Finally, if someone does get struck by lightning, call 911 immediately and, if certified, start CPR.
