The City of Manitowoc is set to discuss a demolition proposal for St. Boniface Church.
The Community Development Authority will be in the 1st Floor Hearing Room in City Hall at 4:00 tonight, where they will review a design application for the church, which calls for its demolition.
The applicant pointed to a water main break that caused significant damage, and stated that the “rectory and church buildings have deteriorated over time due to a lack of ongoing maintenance and investment by the current owner during the ongoing discussion on the future of the buildings.”
However, the CDA noted that “St. Francis of Assisi staff…are working with companies to salvage as much of the building as feasibly possible,” and that the proposal “does not meet the standards and criteria for a Certificate of Appropriateness,” as established in the Manitowoc Municipal Code.
A motion has been issued to deny the proposed demolition, but the CDA will vote on that tonight.
