Manitowoc’s new fire chief is enjoying his new role.
Benjamin Kraynek assumed the role following the retirement of Todd Blaser.
Since taking on this new role in the Fire Department, he says everything has been going smoothly.
“Things are going well,” he said excitedly. “Probably the most frustrating part is getting all the technology and computers and passwords squared away on the job. That’s probably the hardest, most frustrating part. Other than that, it’s steady as it goes.”
Chief Kraynek started at the Manitowoc Fire Station in 2000, and things have definitely changed since then.
Everything has gone from handwritten EMS reports and time cards to being completely digital.
Although the changes do take some time to get used to, Chief Kraynek says they have brought many improvements to the station.
With the 4th of July coming up, Chief Kraynek gives some wise words about the importance of fire safety.
He says that everyone around the fireworks should know the dangers and keep their distance.
He also says that a bucket of water should always be nearby, in case of emergencies, and to diffuse the used fireworks.
Chief Kraynek can also give some advice on what to do with lithium-ion batteries.
These are very common batteries, and you want to make sure that you don’t throw them in the trash when done with them.
The best thing to do is to call the Manitowoc County Recycling Center, and they will take care of them.
These batteries can be dangerous, but the key to staying safe is where you store them.
“Be careful where you store items with lithium-ion batteries, either in scooters and vacuum cleaners, all kinds of different things,” he explained. “Don’t store those items in a back hallway or one of your exits out of the home.”
