With rising temperatures and dew points, local health officials are warning of the dangers that are also on the rise.
The Sheboygan County Division of Public Health is reminding residents that heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. They continue to explain, “It happens when your body’s ability to sweat fails and your temperature rises to a dangerous level. Heat stroke can cause permanent disability or death if the person doesn’t receive emergency treatment.”
Symptoms of heat stroke to look for include confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, and hot and dry skin or high body temperature.
To treat someone experiencing heat stroke, first call 911.
Then, move the individual to a shaded and cool area and remove any outer clothing they may be wearing.
You are then advised to cool them quickly, using cold water, an ice bath, or cool towels on their head, neck, armpits, and groin.
Quick action in the event of heat stroke can be the difference between recovery and serious outcomes, including death.
