With the official first day of summer around the corner, the City of Kiel Fire Department is giving reminders about grill, fire pit, and recreational fire safety.
Any fire pit must be at least 15 feet away from any building, shed, or garage. Recreational fires must not be larger than three by three feet, and any fire must be attended to at all times by someone at least 16 years old.
As a reminder, Kiel residents cannot burn garbage, rubbish, treated wood, wet wood, or other hazardous materials.
Outdoor cooking fires, such as barbecue grills, are generally exempt from recreational fire pit requirements, but propane or charcoal portable cooking devices are prohibited above the first floor in dwellings more than one story in height.
Before starting a fire, the Kiel Fire Department says it’s important to check the weather, keep water nearby, and ensure the fire is completely out before leaving the area.
