As the weather warms up and people want to start enjoying the outdoors, Emplify Health by Bellin is reminding Wisconsinites to take care of their skin.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, but through early detection, it is highly treatable.
Checking for skin cancer can be done in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Matthew Andreoli, Emplify Health by Bellin family medicine physician, suggests everyone examines their entire body for “discolorations, new bumps, patches or moles, or changes in existing moles.”
Another thing to keep in mind are the ABCDEs of melanoma, meaning pay attention to moles that are Asymmetrical, have irregular Borders, show multiple Colors, have a Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, or are Evolving in size, shape, or color.
Parents or caregivers should use these same recommendations to perform skin checks on those who can’t perform them effectively on their own.
Dr. Andreoli also noted, “If you notice anything unusual, reach out right away to your primary care provider or dermatologist for further evaluation.”
