An impersonation scam is once again affecting the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office.
The department explained on their Facebook page that they’ve received reports of scammers contacting residents by phone and falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers.
In some cases, the caller tells the victim they have an active warrant, missed jury duty, or owe money and must make a payment immediately to avoid arrest.
Deputies say the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office will never call demanding money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or any other form of payment.
They will also not instruct a resident to pay money to resolve a warrant or avoid being taken into custody.
The scam calls seem real because they are using the real names of deputies and detectives. Scammers also spoof phone numbers to make it appear the call is coming from law enforcement.
If you get this type of scam call, do not provide personal or financial information, do not send money, and hang up immediately.
Incidents can also be reported to the Manitowoc County Dispatch Center at 920-683-4201.
