Lake Michigan swimmers at Red Arrow Park in Manitowoc
The Wisconsin DNR is asking the public to help update its beach list.
The list is part of their beach program, which reaches out to local beach managers and public health departments along Wisconsin’s Great Lakes coasts to see if any changes are needed.
This year, there’s a proposal in Sheboygan County to reclassify the area of King Park as historical public use.
The DNR says public comments and local knowledge of Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shorelines provide the best information about their 53 miles of coastal beaches.
Maintaining the beach list also keeps Wisconsin eligible for funding under the federal BEACH Act.
The funds allow communities with Great Lakes beaches to monitor E. coli and other bacteria.
DNR Coast Beach Program Manager Jessica Brandt says they continue to improve and upgrade the beach health database and website features and welcome feedback on them throughout the year.
The proposed changes to the beach list are available at dnr.wisconsin.gov.
Public comments can be sent to DNRBeachHealth@wisconsin.gov until the end of December.
