A new exhibit could be opened soon at Manitowoc’s Lincoln Park Zoo.
The Coastal Wetland Aviary project, which received state grant funding, could open as soon as next month.
Zoological Society Coordinator Andi Janicki said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program, there have been a lot of changes to be seen when you enter the zoo.
“Because you can finally see a ton of the river that was hidden before,” he explained. “A big part of that project is just ecological restoration. Restoring it back to its native wetland habitat.”
The aviary is in the flood plain of the Little Manitowoc River and includes a boardwalk trail.
Janicki calls it a very unique exhibit.
“It’s open air now,” he stated. “So we are just bringing in wild birds.”
The City of Manitowoc got around $95,000 for improvements in 2024 through the Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Coastal Management Program.
Fencing has been taken out, and invasive species have been cleared.
Janicki finishes by saying that the wetland aviary will be accessible for almost everyone.
