Wisconsin’s governor is attempting to get funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after record flooding in April.
Manitowoc County is one of thirteen counties that were requested to get eligible funding through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program.
Governor Tony Evers has also requested that the federal agency assist the state in conducting joint preliminary assessments and asked President Trump to declare a major disaster for Wisconsin.
A joint preliminary damage assessment for Public Assistance through FEMA and Wisconsin Emergency Management found more than $17 million in public sector damage.
In his letter to the president, Gov. Evers noted that Manitowoc County faced several major infrastructure and utility issues due to torrential rainfall.
The Shoto Dam on the West Twin River also required tons of rock to fill an eroding breach next to the dam to prevent it from failing.
Mishicot residents were also affected by a surge of clear water into the wastewater system, resulting in the release of some untreated sewage into the West Twin.
The Village and Town of Mishicot, the City of Two Rivers, and the Village of Maribel experienced culvert failures and washouts, causing road damage.
Gov. Evers noted that the Trump Administration did not send public assistance last summer when another round of storms caused over $27 million in damage to communities.
