The Port of Green Bay is experiencing a historically slow start to the shipping season.
A total of just over 40,000 tons of cargo moved through the port in March and April, less than half of the 100,000 tons over the same months last year, and less than one-fifth of the over 200,000 tons in 2024.
Port Director Dean Haen blamed the heavy rainfall for the slow start, saying, “Safety is our top priority, and these elevated flow conditions present real challenges. We are working closely with vessel operators and monitoring conditions continuously to ensure that operations resume based on real-time river conditions.”
He remained optimistic though, adding, “the Port remains a vital force in our regional economy, driving job support and ensuring businesses have access to essential materials.”
