The Wisconsin DNR and DOT remind residents to be safe while driving, boating, and towing over Memorial Day weekend.
The public should expect and plan for heavy traffic on highways throughout the state with many drivers towing boats.
DNR Secretary Karen Hyun says a safe day on the boat starts and ends with a safe trip.
She noted it’s important to “remember that these wonderful natural resources belong to all of us. Whether you’re towing on the highway, putting in at the launch, or cruising across your favorite water, be safe, be aware of your surroundings, and be courteous to other users.”
One of the biggest ways for safe travel is to prevent distracted driving, which increased by 66% last summer compared to the rest of the year.
Drivers hauling a boat would always make sure everything is in good condition before hitting the road.
Once on the water, boaters need to keep an eye on the weather and always tell someone where they are going.
DNR Chief Conservation Warden Casey Krueger says it’s also important to enjoy the waters sober, be careful on sandbars, and always wear a properly fitted lifejacket.
