The School District of Mishicot is gearing up for a new project after completing upgrades to its baseball and softball fields.
Funding for the field upgrades came from a $29 million referendum approved by voters in 2024.
Superintendent Cory Erlandson explains to Seehafernews.com that improvements were made on the field, in the bleachers, and in the dugouts.
There was also a student element in the high school’s Geometry and Construction class, which built the press boxes.
“There was a concrete slab, and (a group of freshmen and sophomores) built everything else on top of that, and it really turned out nice,” he explained. “They’re just putting the finishing touches on them now.”
Erlandson says students have reacted positively to the class.
It also answers the question, when are you going to use what you are learning real life?
“This is one of those examples where they say, ‘You’re going to use it tomorrow and you’re going to use it the next day,’” he noted. “And you’re going to see the results of your learning built up right before your very eyes.”
The baseball and softball diamonds also have new sound systems, which the district hasn’t had before.
With the upgrades done soon, the School District of Mishicot is using referendum dollars to build a new performing arts center.
Supt. Erlandson says it will include more than 600 seats and will also be state-of-the-art.
“We’ll also have a common space that is attached to that,” he described. “That will function as our cafeteria during the day, but also a gathering space for all events. Tournaments. I would assume we will have school dances there.”
The new performing arts center won’t just be for students. Erlandson says it will also be used by the community.
“Any kind of community events that wanted to partner with us and use the space, we’d be able to do that,” he noted. “We have a Wednesday night concert series in the community. Our rain location has always been the elementary gym. That’s fine, but when we bring in these high-quality performers, playing in a gym just doesn’t really showcase what they can do. Just the same with our students with their band and choir concerts and our musicals.”
If everything stays on schedule, the new high school performing arts center should be done by March of next year. Erlandson credited the planning ahead of the referendum for its approval.
The $29 million will also be used for other improvements, including the high school band area, the high school’s front entrance, and consolidating the middle school and high school offices.
