A lot of work is done in Manitowoc before a historic ship returns every spring.
Visit Manitowoc Tourism Director Courtney Hansen explains to Seehafernews.com that Manitowoc, the City of Ludington, and staff from the S.S. Badger are working behind the scenes to prepare for the car ferry’s first sail of the season.
Hansen says that while the Badger sells itself, it’s important that travelers find the Clipper City and Ludington to be great places to explore.
“That’s looked like, from a group perspective, on what site visits, what groups are going to be coming to both of our communities, what we can do to highlight our maritime heritage, our arts and culture in different communities,” she listed. “Working on different special passes and deals for passengers to experience at our hotels.”
Hansen noted that the work also includes enjoyable shoreline cruises, which began last year.

The weekends for the cruises are strategically planned.
“For example, one that happens every year (is) Wisconsin Sand Sculpting Festival weekend,” she noted. “So, I was at Circle Wisconsin working with motor coach operators a few weeks back already talking about what 2027 might look like.”
Hansen hopes visitors from Ludington or wherever they’re traveling from will see the continued growth in Manitowoc over the years.
“When I’m working at the ticket office when folks are coming off on that noon sail or getting back on hearing what we’re they so surprised (on what) has developed in Manitowoc and what their favorite piece was,” she explained. “What their favorite lake or riverside dining or attraction. Just seeing everyone be so surprised and delighted by our community.”
The S.S. Badger will return tomorrow afternoon around 12:00 p.m. during its maiden voyage for the 2026 season.
The City of Manitowoc will celebrate starting at 11:30 a.m. with food trucks, the Manitowoc Lincoln High School band, and a visit from LondonDairy Alpacas.
This year is also special because Manitowoc representatives, including Hansen, will make the trip back to Ludington on the car ferry to meet with Ludington city representatives.
