Local high school sports teams are continuing their battles for conference championships and postseason seedings.
BASEBALL
The Manitowoc Lincoln baseball team will play its fourth game in as many days this afternoon as they host The Ashwaubenon Jaguars in an FRCC contest at Bruce Steinbecker Field.
The Ships dropped a tough doubleheader to FRCC leader and state-ranked Bay Port last Saturday, which about eliminated their chances of contending for the FRCC title, but they are alive for an upper-echelon finish in the conference with a strong second-round finish in league play. Only two games separate teams from third to eighth place, with Manitowoc Lincoln, Green Bay Preble, and West De Pere tied for fourth, one game behind the third-place Pulaski Red Raiders.
Ashwaubenon has struggled this season, with a 2-10 record in the FRCC, including a 10-0 loss to the Ships back on April 14th in Ashwaubenon. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Other games on the schedule include a battle of two of the top three contenders for the Big East North title as second-place Manitowoc Lutheran (4-2 in conference 7-6 overall) hosts third-place Mishicot (3-3 in conference 7-8 overall).
The host Lancers are a game behind conference-leading St. Mary Catholic and had a five-game winning streak snapped by Roncalli last Saturday, while the Indians snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday, squeaking by Oostburg 3-2.
The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Elsewhere, Valders entertains Two Rivers, Hilbert heads to Reedsville, undefeated Kewaunee (19-0) hosts a doubleheader against Sturgeon Bay, 13-5 Denmark is home for 11-5 Marinette, 16-2 Random Lake hosts Cedar Grove-Belgium, Howards Grove heads to Ozaukee, Sheboygan North travels to Green Bay Southwest, Kohler/Sheboygan Christian is at Oostburg, St. Mary Catholic entertains Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, New Holstein heads to Kewaskum and two other Packerland Conference doubleheaders are on the docket as Southern Door is at Sevastopol and Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy has a pair at home against Gibraltar/Washington Island.
SOFTBALL
The Mishicot Indians travel to Manitowoc Lutheran for the first of a home-and-home series with the Lancers this afternoon at Lancer Circle.
A young Indians’ team has taken its lumps against quality competition, but they’ve stood tall in Big East North Conference play with a record of 7-1.
A victory today or a loss by St. Mary Catholic (5-3 in conference) to Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah will give Mishicot the Big East Conference crown, while victories or losses by both teams would mean Mishicot gains no worse than a share of the Division title heading into the final conference game of the year on Thursday.
The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, Valders is looking for revenge this afternoon as they head to New Holstein to battle The Huskies.
A pair of losses to Brillion last week has diminished their chances of winning the EWC title.
They trail both the Lions and Huskies by two games with three conference games remaining.
New Holstein goes for the season series sweep after defeating the Vikings 6-0 back on April 20th in Valders.
Other softball games include Two Rivers hosting Roncalli, Reedsville hosting Hilbert, and Kiel heads to Chilton.
GIRLS SOCCER
Manitowoc Lincoln plays host to FRCC, leading De Pere under the lights tonight at Rubick Field.
The Ships picked up their first conference win last Tuesday at West De Pere, but they are very much alive in the conference title hunt. At 1-2-1, they trail the 3-0-1 Redbirds by just two in the loss column with five conference matches remaining, including tonight.
Coach Ethan Jones’ team has won three of its last five matches, including an 8-0 rout of Roncalli last Saturday at Rubick Field, and they’ll have their hands full against a De Pere team that had allowed two goals all season and won four straight matches with an unbeaten streak of seven heading into Monday night’s home match against Appleton North.
The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Other matches on the schedule include Manitowoc Lutheran hosting Ozaukee/Random Lake, Winnebago Lutheran Academy of Fond Du Lac visits Valders, Sheboygan North entertains Green Bay Southwest Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian hosts Howards Grove, Kohler hosts St. Mary Catholic, Cedar Grove-Belgium is home for Oostburg, Denmark travels to Freedom, Sturgeon Bay is at Kewaunee, West De Pere heads to Green Bay Preble, Notre Dame Academy of Green Bay travels to Pulaski, Green Bay East visits Peshtigo Ashwaubenon hosts Bay Port and Luxemburg Casco travels to Marinette to battle The Marines.
