The Manitowoc/Two Rivers YMCA is celebrating a major milestone for the nationwide organization.
Stephanie Peters with the local YMCA made an appearance on the Hello Lakeshore Podcast, where she spoke about the upcoming 175th Birthday Celebration.
The organization had humble beginnings in London, where, in 1844, a farmer-turned-department store worker and his friends gathered to organize a refuge for young men seeking escape from the hazards of the streets.
“(We have) grown from a small organization of committed men to an inclusive organization that welcomes all people, all ages, all abilities,” Peters noted. “We want to be the most welcoming place on earth, and I think we do a good job of achieving that.
While it started as a bible study organization, Peters says the physical activities offered at the Y are still a big part of the emotional health of its members.
“We’ve come a long way, but we recognize that health and wellness depend on your physical wellness, your emotional wellness, and your spiritual wellness,” she explained.
The entire Manitowoc County community is invited to celebrate with staff at the Y, located along Lake Michigan in Manitowoc, this Thursday (May 14th) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
“We will be showcasing our programs,” Peters said. “Gymnastics will be having the gymnastics team move in, our swim team will be practicing, and then we’ll have stations around the way where you can learn more about all the programs that we have.”
