The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office had a busy Friday last week (May 8th) as deputies were called for multiple fires, a school evacuation, and were involved in a pursuit.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan F. Waldschmidt reports that the busy day began with a structure fire in the Town of Calumet just before 9:30 a.m.
Deputies joined the Calumet Fire Department at the scene, where a bat in a pole shed had caught fire.
Then, just a couple of minutes after that incident began, a School Resource Deputy at Oakfield Elementary received a report from a staff member at Oakfield Middle/High School of a burning odor inside the building.
The building was evacuated, and the Oakfield Fire Department was called to the scene.
The smell was determined to be coming from the roof, and the students were released for the day.
The exact origin is still under investigation at last word. Then, just before 12:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Illinois Avenue in the Village of North Fond du Lac on a report of a garage fire.
The high winds caused the flames to spread to four total garages and two homes.
Deputies were able to help rescue four dogs from a home while the Red Cross assisted displaced residents.
Then, just after 1:00 p.m., deputies spotted a vehicle involved in two pursuits the previous week in Illinois.
The chase started on I-41 near the Town of Friendship and ended after the vehicle rolled while entering a ditch. A 23-year-old male from Des Plaines, Illinois, and a 23-year-old female from Franklin Park, Illinois, were arrested.
Sheriff Waldschmidt praised his team, saying, “As sheriff, I cannot be prouder of the work of our dispatchers and fellow emergency responders across the county.”
